What We Love About Baltimore (And Why It’s the Perfect Place to Build a Career)

Baltimore does not always get the credit it deserves.

It sits an hour from Washington and a couple of hours from Philadelphia and New York, and it often gets treated as the smaller sibling in that lineup. Anyone who actually works here knows better. Baltimore has its own personality, a serious business community, and something that is getting harder to find in an East Coast city: room to build something without needing to already be established.

Our office is on North Haven Street, just east of downtown, and we have been growing here since the beginning. Here is why our team keeps choosing this city.

The business community is real, and it is reachable

Baltimore is a legitimate business city. It is home to the corporate headquarters of Under Armour and T. Rowe Price, one of the largest ports on the East Coast, and Johns Hopkins, which anchors an enormous research and healthcare economy. There is a steady flow of startups, family businesses, and mid-size firms across the metro area.

What makes it different from a larger market is access. In Baltimore, you can actually meet the people running things. Networking events are not so oversubscribed that you never get a conversation. Local business groups will return your email. If you are early in your career and trying to build a network, that access is worth more than proximity to a bigger skyline.

It is a city you can afford to grow in

This one matters more than people admit. Baltimore’s cost of living is meaningfully lower than Washington, New York, or Boston, which changes the math on early-career life.

It means you can live close to where you work instead of commuting ninety minutes. It means a first apartment does not have to come with three roommates. It means the money you make earlier in your career can go toward saving, traveling, or building something rather than disappearing into rent.

For a lot of the people on our team, being able to actually live in the city they work in is a big part of why they stayed.

The neighborhoods have character

Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods, and each one feels distinctly like itself.

Canton and Fells Point have the waterfront and the after-work energy. Federal Hill has the view of the harbor that never really gets old. Hampden has the shops on the Avenue and a personality all its own. Mount Vernon has the architecture and the arts. Highlandtown, right near our office, has some of the best food in the city and does not make a big deal about it.

You do not have to pick one and commit. Most of our team moves around the city constantly, and part of the fun of working here is that everyone has a strong opinion about which neighborhood is best.

The sports are a personality trait

It is impossible to talk about working in Baltimore without talking about the Orioles and the Ravens.

Camden Yards is still one of the best places in the country to watch a baseball game, and it is a short walk from most of downtown. Fall Sundays around here are a citywide event. Our team spends a fair amount of time at both stadiums, and there is something about a shared team allegiance that makes a group of coworkers feel like a group of friends faster than almost anything else.

People here are direct

Baltimore has a reputation for being blunt, and it is earned. People say what they think.

In our line of work, that turns out to be a real advantage. Our team spends every day talking to people face to face, and a city where people give you a straight answer is a good place to learn how to communicate. You develop resilience quickly. You learn how to listen, adjust, and keep going. Those skills transfer to any industry someone eventually moves into.

It also makes for a more honest workplace. Feedback lands better in a city where people are used to giving it.

Growing from here

We started in Baltimore and this is still home, even as our team has expanded into new markets and opened a second office in Cincinnati. The values we operate on, which come down to resilience, commitment, and grit, feel very much like Baltimore values. This is a city that works hard, takes its setbacks personally, and keeps showing up.
